Admitting Need – the Reality Choice
Here are some questions that will stimulate honest discussion and prayer in your small group. Feel free to use some or all of them to explore the topic. Remember to give time for friendship and socialising, as well as prayer and letting the Holy Spirit guide your time together.
“Happy are those who are spiritually poor, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
Jesus, Matthew 5
“You surely will not die! For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
The Serpent, Genesis 3
When we think of ourselves as spiritually complete, without any other need, we are playing God.
- We all try to play God through being in control. Control of our image, other people, our problems and our pain. Why do you feel the need to be in control? List some of the ways you try to control your image, problems, pain or other people.
- Read Romans 7 v 15-17. Can you relate to this? Share your experiences with this kind of tension.
- Read on to chapter 8 v 6 Can you relate to this? When have you experienced such life and peace?
- The consequences of playing God can be fear, confusion, weakness and pride. (For Adam and Eve, the bible says they hid because they were naked and ashamed.) The first healing choice is to admit our powerlessness to change our past, control others and fully overcome our problems. Which of these do you struggle with the most?
- “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” To oppose is a strong action. Why do you think God opposes the proud? What does it mean to humble yourself before God? And what does His gift of grace look like?
- Where are you learning to trust God? Share honestly and ask for prayer to grow in this process.
